Duck, Cover, and Conform America in the 1950
Rationale
The 1950s is an important decade of the Twentieth Century. It marks the end of the Great Depression and the end of the Second World War, and forecasts the stormy 1960s. For the first time in many years, Americans had extra—the United States was a land of plenty. The newly emerging consumer culture, the Cold War, McCarthyism, and the emergence of the Civil Rights movement presented Americans with new opportunities and challenges.
The materials in the following unit provide students the opportunity to examine the decade through primary and secondary sources, individual research, and other activities.
